It is worldwide recognized that Fast Reactors are needed for a sustainable development of Nuclear Energy.
The role of fast reactors is emphasized in the Technology Roadmap for Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems published in December 2002 by the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) which includes three fast reactors (Sodium-cooled, Lead-cooled and Gas-cooled) in the list of the six selected most promising systems.
A large effort has been done in the past to develop the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs). However, the industrial development of SFRs stopped in the United States with the Non Proliferation Act promulgated in 1978 and in Europe when the political decision was taken in February 1998 to abandon Superphenix.
The cost of SFRs has remained well above the cost of the LWRs, several accidents especially in Japan has demonstrate that, because of their complexity, is quite difficult to guarantee an high level of plant availability; safety and acceptability concerns has contributed to slow down their development worldwide.
The renewed interest in FRs and the difficulties encountered in their development have resulted in the fact that at international level their deployment is foreseen but in long term when reduced availability of uranium and large mass of produced waste will impose in any case, whatever the cost, the penetration of the LFR in the market.
Lead has excellent thermal and neutronic properties for the design of a fast reactor and does not react with water or air.
